Hello 2021

What surprises are in store next?

As I speak it’s been 10 months of Working From Home, with proposed changes in the office setup to suggest permanent or vastly increased home working above and beyond the additional 2 days a week I did back in 2020. I still remember the strangeness of that last day in the office… should I empty my locker?…no I’ll be able to swing back and grab things soon enough (spoiler alert: I still haven’t). That office is now gone, permanantly closed - another (far less important) victim of COVID.

I think it’s worth taking some time to reflect on what that means for tech working in general - WFH in an established role and team isn’t perfect but suits the lifestyle for many.

What isn’t so clear is how to ensure the next generation of talent gets the grounding they need to ensure a sense of belonging and camaraderie - as well as continue to address existing structural biases in the workplace. It’s something that needs focus and I appreciate my employer’s relentless focus on supporting it’s staff to juggle the challenges both last year and heading this one.
